Fruit
StrawberryStrawberries are by far the most popular soft fruit eaten in Ireland. There are many varieties available, and they can be grown in the ground, in pots and containers and even in hanging baskets.![]() They require a fertile well drained site in full sunshine. Poor soils can be improved by adding some well rotted farmyard manure. If planting in rows, space the plants 35-45cm with the rows 75cm apart. Ensure the areas around the plants are kept weed free. A good idea is to place a layer of landscape fabric down before planting; this will prevent weeds and keep the fruit clean. Every spring apply a good general purpose fertilizer around the plants. Also apply some sulphate of potash which will encourage more flowers and fruit. Plant should generally be replaced after the third year as yields are substantially reduced after this. |
