The planting site should be in a reasonably well sheltered location, in fertile well drained soil. To improve soil condition and help moisture retention incorporate well rotted farmyard manure.

‘Invicta’ is now the most popular variety of gooseberry. It is more resistant to mildew, and is vigorous in its growth. It is extremely prickly though so ensure to have a good pair of leather gloves at hand.
