Apple TreesChoosing apple trees requires some deal of thought. Factors to take into consideration are site, exposure, soil condition, space requirements to name a few.![]() Choose a warm, sheltered spot, not shaded in any way – especially by large trees that would rob the apple trees of food, water and light. Too much shelter, on the other hand, increases the risk of disease attack, because the foliage stays damp longer. Apples are divided into 2 groups, cooking and dessert (eating) apples. If choosing a cooker the most popular is the Bramleys Seedling. Good varieties of dessert apples are Discovery, James Grieve and Katy. Different apples flower at different times and are categorized into early, mid. mid/late and, late flowering. Most apples require a partner to pollinate (some are more ‘free spirited’ and require two partners!) so choose one that is in the same group or in a group beside it. Don’t worry we’re excellent match makers so we will pair two up when you call in! Regular care is required to keep apple trees in top shape, but overall it is much less time consuming than looking after vegetables.
