Tune in to OceanFM every Thursday morning for the gardening slot just after 11 0 clock. On hand to answer your questions and give weekly tips, is Damien Conlon from our Sligo branch. This year the programme host Margaret has taken the plunge and agreed to start growing her own fruit and vegetables. Every week we will keep you up to date with how she is getting on, with photos and advice.
Last week Damien showed Margaret the simple process of planting up a strawberry pot. This is a simple way to grow these tasty fruits.
What you need;
Strawberry potCompostHorticultural grit/stone chippingsStrawberry plants
Place a layer of horticultural grit/stone chippings at the bottom of the pot. This stops the drainage hole from getting blocked, preventing the pot from becoming waterlogged.
Pour in compost to bring it level with the first line of side holes. Gently remove the strawberry plants from their plastic pots and place the in the holes.
Top up with more compost and repeat the process.
Finally fill near the top, plant the last strawberry plant on top up with more compost. Water the plants.
